MIA MARTINI. L'ULTIMA OCCASIONE PER VIVERE

MIA MARTINI. L'ULTIMA OCCASIONE PER VIVERE

date May 9 > June 14, 2015
place Wall Of Sound Gallery

It’s been twenty years since Mia Martini’s passing. We’re proud and delighted to exhibit for the first time a selection of the most memorable photographs spanning this music icon’s whole career. In many cases these images have been featured on the covers of her most historic albums.

A highly sophisticated and accomplished photographer and artist, Mauro Balletti is very well known to all Italian music lovers having created album covers for Mina for over thirty years. Mimmo Dabbrescia has not only thoroughly documented the Italian music scene of the 60’s and 70’s from De André to Mina, but also the art world making a crucial transition from photographer to art dealer with his own gallery Prospettive d’Arte in Milano. Guido Harari has always been shooting musicians and owes his reputation to his portraits of Lou Reed, Peter Gabriel, Bob Dylan, Fabrizio De André, Giorgio Gaber and Vasco among others. He’s also produced countless successful books and exhibitions. Cesare Monti has been, mostly in the 70’s, the eye of Italian music. Pioneer, poet, video maker, he shot an unprecedented series of iconic album covers, often in collaboration with his wife, illustrator Vanda Spinello, for Lucio Battisti, Pino Daniele, Fabrizio De André, PFM, Edoardo Bennato and many others. The exhibition also features a touching selection of never exhibited before photographs of a very young Mimì Berté (Mia’s early nom de plume) captured between childhood and adolescence, already running for stardom. These images come from Archivio Mia Martini courtesy of her father, Giuseppe Berté.

Like the book it is culled from (curated by Menico Caroli and Guido Harari, published by TEA), this exhibition couldn’t have been named but L’ultima occasione per vivere (Last chance to live). Mimì didn’t make any difference between the stage and her real life. Whenever she felt trapped, bought and sold, cheated, she would set the whole world on fire, asking for no permission, claiming nothing. She danced life with death in her heart when in ’95 yet another abrupt change, like the ones she got us used to, turned her light out. Our aim is to turn it on again with her photographer friends and her father Giuseppe. With joy and respect. With gratitude. The opening on May 9th will truly be a unique opportunity to meet them and share memories and passions.

For the duration of the show all photographs will be available as signed and numbered fine art editions with a super specially discounted price, including an extra image by every photographer. This extra image is not featured in the show and is printed as an 8x10in in an edition of only 10.
